Why Google Bought YouTube
It's the [advertising], stupid. According to Fortune magazine's David Kirkpatrick, the real reason why Google bought YouTube is Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, thinks they can deliver targeted, measurable ads to TV viewers in the same way they've been able to dliever them to search results and affiliates. Google's managers now seem to believe they can do the same thing with print, radio and TV, albeit with much of the testing taking place on the more immediate and low-cost medium of the Internet. Buying YouTube will give Google a platform on which advertisers can experiment with TV ads in different forms.Honestly, if anyone can do it, Google can. I don't mind paying for content. But, I do mind paying for the right, the obligation really, to watch ads. It's why I rarely watch TV. And it's why I use the remote early, often and late to avoid ads. Citizen democracy should include the right to watch what you want without being forced to watch what you don't want to watch.
