Influencing the Influencers
I'm working with a site that has tremendous and broad consumer appeal. Rather than struggling to find in bound link targets and Buzz outlets, I'm struggling to contain and prioritize that list. The last few months, we tried an experiment. We targeted individual sites with in bound link requests and got the typical response. A few said yes. A few asked for reciprocal links. A lot never returned email or phone calls. All told, we had the success rate one would expect. Then, we looked for very influential individuals. The Maven, Salespeople and Connectors in Malcolm Gladwell's language. Then, something very interesting happened. Our in bound links tripled in weeks. Really. Can I definitively credit one very influential blogger, moderator or opinion leader with specific new links? Absolutely not, but with the help of Excel I can show a correlation between the day we spoke to an influential person, or an opinion leader blogged about us, and a subsequent spike in new links.
